Unsung Heroines
Year By Year
Leading Ladies of the British Musical Theatre

When theatre programmes grow old and faded, the careers of the British musical theatre's leading ladies, that gallant band of women who - often in difficult circumstances - did their utmost to keep their shows running, are apt to be overlooked. It is not difficult to find a list of facts about such players as Elaine Paige, Mary Martin, Carol Channing or Julie Andrews, but there is an army of performers of whom it is not easy to find anything in print. Unsung Heroines salutes the ladies who did the leading in British musicals.

In general, the main appearances of the performers in musicals and revues within the period are given, but details of roles in straight plays, films, radio and television will not as a rule be discussed.

New subjects are added at frequent intervals, so return to this page to refresh your interest.
