Nottingham Playhouse 1970
Programme cover of the original Nottingham Playhouse
production of 1970
The musical of this famous novel and play was originally directed
by Gillian Lynne at the Nottingham Playhouse in 1970. Although
it had positive reviews, it did not reach the West End. There
were numerous rumours of revivals and the film director Bryan
Forbes thought of to make a film of it - he made The Slipper
and the Rose instead. A demo recording was made after the Nottingham
production. When I heard this, I was hooked and after reading
the script, decided to put the show on.

(Mrs Jike) sing 'The Spirits' in the 1995 production
With much script revision and some new songs the show was
presented for a week by Just-the-Ticket Theatre Company (then
amateur performers only) at the Rhoda McGaw Theatre, Woking,
Surrey in 1995. It was very well received by the public and theatre
world alike - including Gillian Lynne.
We recorded a cast album which garnered a good review in Show
Music Magazine [see also separate record review in Record Cabinet].
It is still available and can be obtained by emailing
me.
